From Curious to Confident: Your Path to Lawful Firearms Ownership in Canada

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a licensed firearms owner in Canada, you’re not alone. We’ve been receiving a growing number of inquiries from individuals who want to better understand the process, the responsibilities, and the opportunities that come with lawful firearms ownership.

At Shield Academy, we believe that getting started should feel clear, professional, and empowering, not confusing or intimidating. Whether you’re brand new or simply looking to formalize your knowledge, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know and how to take the next step.

1. The Path to Firearms Ownership in Canada

Canada has a well-defined and safety-focused licensing process designed to ensure that firearms owners are trained, responsible, and compliant with the law.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Take a Certified Safety Course at SHIELD Academy

You’ll begin by completing one (or both) of the following federally recognized courses:

  • CFSC (Canadian Firearms Safety Course) – Required for non-restricted firearms (rifles and shotguns)
  • CRFSC (Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course) – Required for restricted firearms (primarily handguns)

Step 2: Pass the Written & Practical Exams

Each course includes both a knowledge test and hands-on safety evaluation.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Within a couple days of successfully completing your course you will receive two emails, one from Shield Academy congratulating you and providing guidance on next steps including tips for submitting your license application. The second email will come from the CFP (Canadian Firearms Program) confirming you have completed the required courses and are now eligible to submit your license application. You’ll then follow the guidance provided and apply for your firearms license through the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program, including background checks and references.

Step 4: Wait for Approval

There is a mandatory waiting period for first-time applicants during which time your application is reviewed and after which your license is issued.

2. PAL vs RPAL — What’s the Difference?

Understanding the two main licence types is key:

PAL (Possession and Acquisition Licence)

This is your entry point into firearms ownership in Canada. It allows you to:

  • Own and acquire non-restricted firearms (most rifles and shotguns)
  • Purchase ammunition for those firearms

RPAL (Restricted Possession and Acquisition Licence)

This is an additional qualification that allows you to:

  • Own restricted firearms (primarily handguns and certain rifles)
  • Transport them legally to approved locations such as shooting ranges

The Key Takeaway

  • PAL = Required to get started
  • RPAL = Optional, but highly recommended

3. Why We Recommend Getting Your RPAL

Even if you don’t plan to own a handgun today, there are important reasons to complete your RPAL now:

  • Future Flexibility: Regulations evolve. Having your RPAL ensures you’re already qualified if policies change.
  • Broader Training Opportunities: Many advanced training programs include restricted firearms platforms.
  • Stronger Skill Development: Learning across multiple firearm types builds safer, more capable shooters.

A Note on Handguns in Canada

There’s a lot of confusion around this topic, so let’s clarify:

  • Handguns are not banned in Canada
  • However, the transfer (sale and purchase) of handguns is currently suspended

This means:

  • Existing lawful owners can still possess and use them under regulations
  • New acquisitions are currently restricted

Bottom line: Having your RPAL positions you for the future, even while current policies limit access.
